Objectives

The profile of the graduate of this official master’s degree is a professional with a broad scientific, technological and socio-economic background, prepared to direct and manage software development projects.

The formation of the university degree of Master in Software Engineering allows the graduate to reach the GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE TITLE, which are detailed at different levels of deepening:

1. Possess the knowledge and skills of software development, as well as the professional capacity necessary to work as software engineers in international contexts, in a variety of application domains, with demonstrated ability in at least one specific domain.
2. Work efficiently as part of a project team to develop quality software, leading the work in several areas of software development, such as project management, requirements analysis, architecture or quality control.
3. Recognize conflicts in the objectives of software projects, finding the appropriate solutions within the limits of cost, time, existing knowledge and idiosyncrasies of the organizations involved.
4. Design the appropriate software engineering solutions according to existing ethical, social, legal, technological and economic restrictions.
5. Understand and appreciate the importance of feasibility analysis, negotiation, efficient work habits, leadership and good communication in the context of software development.
6. Ability to learn new models, techniques and software development technologies as they arise, and appreciate the need for continuous professional development.
7. Ability to analyze the weaknesses and strengths of software development technologies, becoming agents of change within their own organizations.

Between the main professional careers for EMSE graduates we can mention:

• Analyst-Programmer: the analysts-programmers work in the development of software performing functions in all the phases of the projects.
• Project manager: project managers are responsible for coordinating the projects, which includes recruiting the analyst-programmers, preparing them with the work plan, managing the budget, and so on.
• IT Consultant: consultants advise companies in relation to how to respond to their problems using computer technologies.

The Office of External Relations of the UPM in the same way that serves as a bridge between companies and universities to manage internships in companies and some scholarships, fulfills the task of serving as a connection between the supply and demand of specialized professionals upon receiving constantly different job offers which students and graduates of our school and our master’s programs can access.

International Mobility and Double Degrees

One of the main strengths of the European Master’s in Software Engineering (EMSE) is its strong international character. As an official 120 ECTS master’s degree with a duration of two years, it offers mobility opportunities that are not feasible in shorter programs. The objective is for students to complete their full second year, or at least one semester, at a foreign university, strengthening their multicultural profile. Currently, there are two main pathways: Double Degree Agreements and the Erasmus Program.

Double Degree Agreements

Thanks to agreements with world-elite universities, students can obtain a second degree by completing their training abroad. Depending on the agreement, there are two modes of admission: Before starting the master’s degree: Admission period open between November and February prior to the first year. During the first year: Application for admission between December and March while studying the first year at UPM.

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech)

It offers two possible academic pathways after the first year at UPM: either 1 semester at Georgia Tech’s European campus + 1 semester at Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus; or 1 semester at Georgia Tech’s European campus + 1 year at Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus (with a work permit of up to three years).

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT)

The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago (the third largest city in the US) offers the opportunity to obtain an IIT degree in Computer Science with a specialization in business. The agreement between UPM and IIT involves a significant discount on Master’s level tuition fees for UPM students under a double degree program. Graduates of this program can enjoy up to 3 years of work authorization included in the student visa immediately after graduation.

Doshisha University

The Doshisha University is a private university in the city of Kyoto, Japan. Doshisha University is currently one of the most prestigious in Japan and is considered one of the most selective private universities in the country. Doshisha is known for its strong connection with companies in the Kansai region. It has a strong international focus and offers, together with EMSE, a 3-year double degree program.

European Mobility Program (LLP-ERASMUS)

This program allows students to move to other universities within the European Higher Education Area.

• Duration: Minimum 3 months, maximum 12 months.
• Costs: The student pays tuition at UPM and is exempt from payment at the destination university.
• Financial Aid: The EU provides a monthly allowance, occasionally supplemented by States, Autonomous Communities, or Universities.
• Options: The Technical School of Computer Engineering (ETSI Informáticos) at UPM has agreements with more than 100 European universities.
